Disease related functions

A study by Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, has found that the additive E211 or sodium benzoate, found in soft drinks and sauces, damages the mitochondria. As stated: "The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it - as happens in a number of diseased states - then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously. And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to this damage - Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of ageing."

Side Effects

There are no contraindications for coenzyme Q10; it is exceedingly safe. According to the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, precautions include only Warfarin users. Coenzyme Q10 may decrease the effectiveness of Warfarin, though this warning is based on only one report. The PDR also indicates that it may reduce the need for certain type II diabetes medicines, so the type II diabetic user should be aware of this. Adverse reactions include mild gastrointestinal symptoms in some persons (Hendler 2001), though we have received no reports of this.

Natural Sources of CoQ10

COENZYME Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring substance found in many fresh foods, which unfortunately is deficient in most diets. It would be necessary to consume: one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef, or two and ˝ pounds of peanuts to obtain 30 mg of CoQ10. CoQ10 has no known toxicity or side effects. CoQ10 is also synthesized in all tissues of healthy individuals. CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and is essential in the production of energy at the muscular cellular level. It is also essential for maintaining optimum health of the cardiovascular system.

Co-Q10, Mitochondria and Cellular Energy

By now you probably know what an anti- oxidant is and how important they are to protect our body. Anti-oxidants are what are known as free radical scavengers. Co Q10 is the most powerful antioxidant.

CoQ10 supplementation is essential wherever oxygen utilization and cellular energy are suboptimal.

What is the mitochondria?

Anyone who has studied human biology, physiology or related subjects at university may remember that mitochondria are the cells power house. It is responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP. If the mitochondria is damaged, put simply we get our energy from other less productive and lower efficiency pathways. Less energy production means fatigue.

A good analogy for CoQ10’s role is similar to the role of a spark plug in a car engine.  Just as the car cannot function without that initial spark, the human body cannot function without CoQ10. If the body’s level of CoQ10 start dropping, so does your general health. Scientists have estimated that once the body levels of CoQ10 become more than 25 % deficient many diseases start to flourish!

Statin Drugs Lower CoQ10 Levels:

While there are minimal known adverse interactions between CoQ10 and any drug or nutrient, many drugs adversely affect CoQ10 levels.  Most notably are warfarin, chemotherapy agents such as Adriamycin and the very commonly prescribed statin drugs like lovastatin (Mevacor), preavastin (Pravachol), atorvastatin (Lipitor) and simvastatine (Zocor).

Statin drugs are one of the most widely used pharmacological products in the world that generate their makers billions of dollars annually. They are primarily used to treat conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and osteoporosis, but scientific research reveals that statin drugs are extremely effective in lowering total cholesterol and triglycerides. Unfortunately Statin drugs have a huge down side. When they reduce cholesterol levels they also lower Co Q10 levels, and remember reduced CoQ10 levels can cause detrimental health effects. If you must take statin drugs then the imperative to take regular supplementary CoQ10 is even greater!

If the levels of CoQ10 in your body drop to below 25 %, life can no longer be sustained!
